Blackburn Thunder 3-1 Kingston Diamonds B Saturday 28th November 2009
Drawing confidence from the Diamonds previous win over Blackburn, the girls hoped to capitalise on the more familiar large ice pad. Although missing Beth Davis though a one match ban the Team was bolstered by new players Liz Stewart formerly of Peterborough Penguins and Becky Craig formerly of Telford Wrekin Raiders in addition to Kirsten Deighton returning from Premier Team duties.
The game started with some excellent end-to-end play with the Diamonds taking the opportunity to play three-line hockey. Elaine Kennington opened the scoring for the Diamonds after a little under 4 minutes of play with an excellent solo effort. This was followed by penalties from both sides to the detriment of the three line system with both the power play and penalty kill lines being called upon.
The Diamonds started the second period one goal up but soon doubled their lead with yet another excellent Kennington goal assisted by Lindsey Nicklin. Although tested, the Diamonds defensive unit were remaining solid until halfway into the second when a miss communication caught Dawn out with an easy goal that was scored by Penelope Fletcher (mum of the Kingston Diamonds U16’s Goalie). Concerned about loosing the lead the Diamonds went on the offensive which was rewarded with a blue line goal from Bryony Watson putting the Diamonds 1 – 3 up as the second period ended.
The third period saw the Diamonds to continue to attack the Blackburn net but with no further goals. The game ended 1 – 3 in the Diamonds favour, extending the Diamonds lead over their league rivals and moving up yet another place in the league table. Shots on the Diamond’s net were documented as 52 and shots on Blackburn’s net were documented as 30, possibly the wrong way around but Dawn was not complaining! Spirit of the Game for the Diamonds went to Charlotte Cook. |
